Philately Fridays: Zaire, 1983

This is my favorite set I've come across recently. Four stamps from Zaire in honor of the 1983 Plenipotentiary Conference in Nairobi. Great mix of detailed illustration work with heavy graphic lines and big color decisions.

Philately Fridays: Germany, 1964

Beautifully composed and stylishly illustrated stamp commemorating the Judo portion of the 1964 Summer Olympic Games held in Tokyo, Japan. This was the first year that Judo was an official Olympic event. Competing on behalf of the USA was Ben Nighthorse Campbell, who would go on to become a State Representative and then Senator for the state of Colorado. See footage of Campbell taking on Thomas Chi Hong Ong from The Philippines below.

Philately Fridays: Romania, 1969

A postage stamp commemorating the centuries-old Romanian New Year dance known as Capra. In the dance, men known as Kukeri dress up wearing the skins of sacrified goats, beads, kerchiefs, tassels, ivy, and basil to scare off the evil spirits. Click here to read more and see photos of some of these wild costumes.
